The Road to Breaking the Sound Barrier, one of the two greatest scientific advancements of aviation

October 12, 1947

Glennis and he had planned to go away for the weekend but she was having morning sickness due to her pregnancy. They stayed home. She was feeling better by Sunday so they went to the local watering hole, Pancho Barnes' Happy Bottom Riding Club, for dinner.

After dinner, the two went on a romantic moonlit horseback ride.

The competitive couple decided to race back to the barn. Someone had closed the gate. It has been said jokingly that person was Bob Hoover; he was the backup pilot for the X-1.

Yeager's horse pulled about 5 Gs avoiding that gate but Yeager kept going over it.
