The History of Chuck Yeager

American Hero

The Road to Breaking the Sound Barrier, one of the two greatest scientific advancements of aviation

October 10, 1947

Chuck Yeager flies the XS-1 on USAF/Yeager's 8th powered flight. Yeager reaches MACH 0.997 Purpose: Stability and control test.

Yeager attempts this on his 8th powered flight. He makes a turn in the aircraft, which simulates what the plane will do flying straight and level at a faster speed.

While being shaken all about the cockpit as he was during transonic flight, Yeager is able to use the manual trim tab to control the aircraft.

He lands and tells Ridley; we've got it made.
