Annual March Cal-Ore Fish Derby 2006
At the 2006 Cal-Ore Fish Derby (March 9-11, 2006), General Chuck Yeager was made an honorary “Soul Brother” by former Oakland Raider superstars Raymond Chester and MacArthur Lane, and honorary Raider Jack West. The ex-Raiders gave him Kentucky Fried Chicken, shades (sunglasses), baseball cap put on backwards, a loud boom box, and a gray Afro wig. Not to be outdone, General Yeager promptly responded by assigning the players to the “Honky Flight for a Night Mission” – with strict orders not to smile.
This fun all took place at the Cal-Ore Fish Derby, which General Yeager has participated in 8 times in its 24 years. Gen. Yeager participates in the two day event by fishing with a team of four. His team has including his wife Victoria, Gary Loomis, and other friends. Acclaimed as the best fisherman on the river, Gen. Yeager earned the most points in the derby three years ago. He is a strong supporter of the “catch and release” objective of the derby, and has supported the extra-curricular fundraising activities by donating several items over the years, including airplane rides with him as the pilot.
Dan Brattain of Cal-Ore Life Flight, donates his time and airplane to bring General Yeager and some former Oakland Raiders to the Derby.
The Friends of Cal-Ore Fish have been sponsoring fishing derbys for the last 24 years. All funds raised from three annual events are used to improve fish habitats.
